St John Ambulance
We had a visitor this morning. Kathryn, a paramedic from St John Ambulance came to talk to us about her job.
We learnt about the jobs that emergency services do, Police, Firemen and Ambulance.
We saw some of the things they carry in ambulances to help sick or injured people.
If we ever have to call emergency services we need to stay calm, speak clearly and give our full address. When we dial we can say 1- go -1 -go 1.
We always need to say our city.

Air Force Visit
On Thursday some members of the NZ Defence Force came to visit Brightwater School. They arrived in two unimogs and put out some activities for us to do at lunchtime. When the bell rang we all went to the hall for a short assembly. We saw pictures of the planes and helicopters that they fly in. Then the Year 5's and 6's went and did a series of activities with the defence force people.

Insects
We have been learning about insects with Mr B on a Thursday.
Insects have an three main body parts an abdomen, a thorax, and a head. They also have six legs, wings, a tail, antennae, eyes, and some have stingers.
We made insects out of Harakeke wood, cardboard, pins, hot glue and wire. We coloured the wings in with vivid.

Museum
On Monday Room 2 went to visit the Museum in Nelson. We learnt about parrots and World War I.
Nicky introduced us to the display. Then we went off into 5 groups.
At the first station we pressed buttons and heard the bird sounds of the stuffed birds. We also had to match pictures to the birds.
At station two there was a trap for rats, stoats, and possums. These are pests because they eat bird eggs, baby birds and birds.
At station three we talked about tracking devices that are put on birds legs so people can monitor the birds movements.
At station four we had to carefully sketch some stuffed birds in a cage. There was a Tui, Morepork, Kiwi and a Tit.
Outside on the deck we had to find pictures of Parrots hidden in the garden and match them up and make a graph of the different kind of parrots.
We had to decide if they were Kea, Kakapo, Kakariki or Kaka.
At the end we had a very quick look through the World War 1 gallery.
